In February 2009, we met as a group to explore the question, “what is Brooklyn, and how can we put that on stage?” We spent the next five months carrying out our investigation, uncovering found history, personal stories, family recollection, and YouTube videos; conducting on-the-street interviews, neighborhood field trips, e-mail questionnaires, and vigorous debates. And putting it all into a play.

We’re now unveiling an early look at the results. Part theatre piece and part art installation; part travel guide and part oral history; stuffed to the brim with video, puppetry, field recordings and faux historical re-enactments, “Brooklyn Play” is our attempt to express (some of) the many identities and experiences of Brooklyn.

Come join us for play, art, food, and drink. See what we’ve been up to, share your thoughts, bring your own stories of Brooklyn.

Tuesday, June 23 at Lumenhouse // 8:00 pm
47 Beaver Street, Brooklyn
J/M to Flushing Avenue

Saturday, June 27 at The Greenpoint Public Library // 3:00 pm
107 Norman Avenue, Brooklyn
G to Nassau Avenue

Each presentation should run about 45 minutes, with the opportunity for informal discussion afterwards, as well as Food + Drinks at neighborhood restaurants.

Free Admission. Donations will be taken to benefit Brooklyn Public Libraries, who are facing severe budget cuts in the year ahead.

New York in January.
Cold days, long evenings, the perfect time to curl up with a nice beer and a film that walks the line between melancholy and blasphemy.

Z Flicks starts the new year with “In Bruges”, Martin McDonagh’s tale of hope, redemption, hookers, shootouts, dwarves and ketamine. After a job goes horribly wrong, hitmen Ray and Ken are sent to Bruges to hide out, lay low, and get in some sightseeing. But what begins as an unexpected vacation becomes something much more sinister, as midwinter days of idyllic wander turn into evenings of sex, guns and second chances. And when Ken is told to murder his own partner, all bets are off.

A difficult film to explain and an easy one to love, “In Bruges” was Drayton’s favorite movie of 2008. Like a fine Belgian beer, it contains a variety of flavors and tastes, culminating in a unique whole. Viciously hilarious and surprisingly touching, and featuring Colin Farrell in a Golden Globe winning performance, this is a reason to brave the cold.

Thursday, January 22
@ The Zebra Compound
476 Jefferson Street, #202
L Train to Jefferson.

Doors @ 7:30, Movie @ 8:00. Free.
Gay Beer and Normal Beer*. Cheap.
And, as always, popcorn fresh from the popper.

* “One gay beer for my gay friend, one normal beer for me, because I am normal” - Ray, In Bruges

Hey Everyone, Drayton here, and I’m very pleased to announce that Zebra Crossing is about to embark on a new adventure. For many years I’ve wanted to start a film series, at which I could share some of my favorite films, from modern classics to obscure gems to some of the great films from the 70’s and before. When Chloë expressed the same interest, we decided to do something about it, and Z Flicks was born.

We’re going to be showing a new film every month, with delicious drinks, popcorn and more. Admission will always be free, and drinks are offered at a special low price.

For our first film, we will be showing a somewhat Holiday themed film, Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands”. Come check out Johnny Depp in bondage, and wonder if maybe Winnona Ryder’s “But I’m a good girl” antics might have foreshadowed some of the trouble that followed.

See you there!

Thursday, December 18

@ The Zebra Compound

476 Jefferson Street, #202 (L Train to Jefferson St)

Drinks @ 7:30 and Throughout the Evening

Film @ 8:00

Drinks are 1 for $3 and 2 for $5

Popcorn is on the house

This past weekend was a big one for all of us here at Zebra Crossing.

Chloë and Lee were part of the team that presented BETA Spaces, the latest weekend of art and community from Arts in Bushwick. Additionally, they both contributed work to Maggie Pounds’ Summer Home: Exported, which featured a sneak preview of Chloë’s SUITCASE, soon to be on view in our upcoming Suitcase Plays. And if all of that wasn’t enough, Chloë also threw a poetry slam, a closing night party, and was followed by a reporter all day.

Meanwhile, Drayton was busy over at Eyebeam, where he collaborated with Christina Kral and Dan Ribaudo on Video Womb, which debuted during MIXER underground, a brilliantly deranged party, art soiree, glam rock concert and unending maze thought up by David Jimison. Featuring such highlights as JooYoun Paek’s “Six Walls”, Jeffrey Crouse’s BoozBot, and the first-ever NYC appearance by Judi Chicago, the night was a giddy fantasia of art, sex and merriment. How fantastic? Well, Gothamist raved, saying “the enthusiasm was contagious, evoking the spirit of the old Rubulad parties when they started in pre-gentrified South Williamsburg”.

Thanks to everyone who came out for either of these events, and look forward to seeing you at our next big weekend, for Suitcase Plays.
