Suitcase Plays // An Evening of New Work, Mayhem and Music

at the Bushwick Starr, November 20 - 22

Zebra Crossing has invited some close associates to create an evening of new work inspired by a simple suitcase. The result is four wildly divergent pieces by a cross-section of artists, all linked by their playful exploration of the magic box: out of both the suitcase and the theatre, anything can emerge. Using music, movement, sculpture, film and theatre, “Suitcase Plays” offers a variety of interpretations of the same basic structures: the logistics of containment, and the process and results of unpacking.

“What it was like” is a mixed-media sculpture piece that integrates a central art object, two bodies, animation, and the human voice.  Inspired by Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood, Kay Thompson’s Eloise, and E.B. White’s “Here is New York,” “What it was like” brings to life memory’s delights, non-linearities, and inconsistencies. Conceived/constructed by Chloë Bass, Lee Mandell, and Jayson Rahmlow; performed by Chloë Bass and Erin Maya Darke.

SOLDIER’S TALE (AGENT ZERO) is a remix of Igor Stravinsky’s L’HISTOIRE DU SOLDAT with a new libretto featuring the writings of Gilbert Arenas, NBA Blog superstar. What happens when a soldier returns home from war, and what happens when a player is no longer in the game? Created by Rafael Gallegos and ConLab, Stravinsky’s tale of the soldier who sells his soul to the devil is updated for the hip-hop generation.  Featuring Christopher Loar, Stephane Magloire and Martina Potratz.

Having seen better days - and better cities - Mercedes Lunara, fallen heiress and self-help guru, hits rock bottom in “Reno Flophouse”.  Living as half vagabond/half pilgrim, Mercedes navigates the uncertainties of a life turned upside down, dispensing advice on light, love and Golden Showers along the way. Created by Drayton Hiers and Amy Jackson.
